UAB Service Learning and Undergraduate Research

UAB Service Learning connects UAB students, faculty, and community nonprofit partners together to enrich student academic learning, promote civic engagement and to strengthen and support our local and global communities.

The Office of Service Learning is a bridge between the instructional and service missions of the University, enabling students and faculty to apply classroom knowledge and research with community partners to address community issues. The Office of Service Learning also supports and models the UAB Values of collaboration and community involvement.

There are four foundations of a good service learning course:

1. Engagement- the service component meets a public good
2. Reflection – students link their service experience to course content,  reflecting upon why that service is important
3. Reciprocity – reciprocity with the community partner is evident in the service component
4. Public dissemination - the service work is presented to the public in some way
