The Jug Tavern of Sparta

The Jug Tavern sits at the gateway to the Sparta Historic District. Originally a separate hamlet on the banks of the Hudson River, Sparta was incorporated into the Village of Sing Sing (later Ossining) in 1813.

The original Jug Tavern was built as early as the 1780s by Peter Davids, a tenant farmer for Philipsburg Manor. In 1974, members of the Sparta Association raised awareness of its historic significance to support its preservation. The town purchased the property in 1976, and in 1986 the property was purchased by the newly formed Jug Tavern of Sparta.

Today the building serves as a testament to the efforts of residents, government officials, local community groups, and volunteers. A treasured Ossining landmark, it has been on the National Register since 1976. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Jug Tavern of Sparta focuses on community engagement by providing architectural walking tours, public lectures, educational materials, and historic photography.
