The Dead Ordinary

Hi, I’m Joe. I’m a genealogist investigating the forgotten true crimes and lost lives of the Victorian and Edwardian world.

The people in these videos were 'dead ordinary': labourers, servants, paupers, a twelve-year-old sent away for five years over a tobacco pouch. Nobody wrote their biographies, so I rebuild their lives from the records they left behind: court reports, workhouse registers, prison files and census returns.

Every video has a full list of sources on my website, so you can check, read and question every claim. As the sole researcher and creator, my mission is to build a proper archive of these lives and bring the 'dead ordinary' back to life.
