St.George's Church Official Madurai

St.George's church which is endearingly called as stone church by the people of Madurai was
established in the year 1881 and is well known for its magnificent square shaped black stone
architecture and Anglican tradition of liturgy. The historical and traditional church is situated at
the heart of Madurai and functions as a centre for spiritual and social movements. The history of
the church can be traced back to 18th century Madurai, especially after the British captured
Madurai in the year 1763 and stationed its regiment in a place called Main Guard Square. The
18th century European as well as the indigenous Anglican persuasion did not have a proper place
of worship or a designated clergy to conduct the liturgy. They were conducting worship services
in houses and were served now and then by neighbouring district missionaries from an Anglican
mission called as SPCK (Society for Propagation of Christian Knowledge Mission).
