Matthew Hirtle

Hi I’m Matthew and Of Earth is my woodworking and furniture-making studio focused on high-end, custom pieces made with natural materials and finishes drawn from the living world.

This channel will document the making of fine furniture built from rare and highly figured woods, along with select domestic species. My work blends traditional joinery with modern techniques, emphasizing material honesty, structural integrity, and designs that let the wood speak.

You’ll see short-form process clips, craftsmanship details, and behind-the-scenes looks of the shop, furniture design and build processes. Live edge slabs, inlays, sculpting, structural elements , and hand-rubbed finishes are explored as functional, enduring choices.

Over time, the channel will expand into long-form builds and complete project stories. I welcome you to join me in the journey of making objects meant to last.
