Tatanka Ohitika (Fredo Ouvrier de Longwy)

Fredo Ouvrier de Longwy – better known by his Lakota name **Tatanka Ohitika** (“Proud Brave Buffalo”) – is a German artist, visionary, and for over 35 years an active **Sun Dancer** among the Lakota in South Dakota.

Born in 1952 as Wilfried Ouvrier de Longwy in Lippstadt, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a master student of Joseph Beuys. After working as an art director in international advertising agencies (Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Chicago), living as a begging monk in India, and spending time on a solitary Maldives island, he found his spiritual home among the Lakota. There he was taught by medicine men such as Leonard Crow Dog, adopted into the tribe, and given his Native American name.
Many of his works have already been presented in animated, gently psychedelic versions in which colors pulse and the paintings literally “breathe” and dance.
