MAX BRAND Ensemble

The MAX BRAND Ensemble was founded by Richard Graf in 2012. In the spirit of its namesake – the famous Austrian composer Max Brand (1896-‐1980) – the ensemble has since been dedicated to contemporary music in all its forms including rhythms of the world, live electronics and different approaches of musical improvisation.

Both his specific authenticity and uncompromising creativity are first reflected in his internationally and successfully acclaimed futuristic opera "Maschinist Hopkins" (1929), and then in turning to the designing of new technologies and practices of musical production culminating in his strong belief in electronic music.
Due to his collaboration with the American electrical engineer Robert Moog he designed the first functional synthesizer in 1968, the so called Max Brand Synthesizer which is also known as Moogtonium and is still on display for today's admirers.

He died inconspicuously in Langenzersdorf (Lower Austria) in 1980.
