Iccha | Kyo-machiya & Kominka, Where People Gather

Kyo-machiya were built for living and working under one roof: a shop in the front room, the family's home behind it, and on festive days, many neighbors gathered inside. Houses that once held that life are still disappearing. Kyoto loses about 700 machiya a year, roughly two a day (Kyoto City survey, FY2024).

Iccha looks for the next people to live in and use old townhouses and farmhouses in Kyoto and Iga, so they can become places where people gather again. Here we share walkthroughs of homes looking for new residents, their details, and the neighborhoods around them, the good parts and the hard work alike.
