He Wei · Fuzhou Lacquered Leather

Leather for the body, fir wood for the frame, natural lacquer for the surface. That is the old Fuzhou lacquered leather trunk.

I'm He Wei, representative inheritor of the Traditional Lacquered Leather Trunk-Making Craft of Fuzhou, a Fuzhou municipal intangible cultural heritage item. In 2010 I became an apprentice of Liu Ercheng (1932–2024), a trunk maker in Fuzhou. Today our small team works at the Fugong Leathercraft Intangible Cultural Heritage Center in Fuzhou, under our brand Linyi.

On this channel: the bench, the leather, the lacquer.
• Making Wukong – a long-form series following a lacquered leather mask, layer by layer.
• Process Shorts – short clips of lacquer and leather work, workshop sound only.

Featured in CNN Travel (2017).
Wukong pieces are independent handmade works. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Game Science.
