Hokkaido Nomad

Joys and challenges of the perfect lifestyle migrating between urban Taiwan and rural Hokkaido, Japan which are a short three-and-a-half hour flight from one another. Taiwan is perfect for working and gaining legal residency because its government is efficient and immigrant friendly, its economy booming and its national healthcare excellent. Hokkaido is a remarkably low cost rural paradise rapidly reverting to nature as its population declines. Both countries are safe. Skiing in Hokkaido is world class and summers are cool.

In 2009 I bought seven forested acres with a mountain stream running thru it in the foothills of the Hidaka Mountains of Hokkaido and built a house and greenhouse on it. I spend three to four months a year there living the life of a seasonal nomad on the fringes of Japan's newest national park: Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi. I show you how I make it all work.
