Arey

The name AREY is a tribute to 18 year old artist Sam McDonald’s mother, Kristen Arey, who passed away in april of 2021. Raised in Asheville, NC, Sam grew up around music and had an affinity for the guitar before he was big enough to hold it. Writing songs became a way for him to cope through a slew of tragedy, loss, family and love issues… his music tells his life story- one his listeners can often relate to.

The complex feelings and inner thoughts around love, fear, guilt, shame, redemption, God and purpose are common to people in all seasons of life. His lyrics are thought provoking and intricate, yet simple and profound. His style can’t be narrowed into one category; rather he moves in and out of styles like R&B and indie pop while following the journey of his life through music.
