UNESCO Souwest Nova Biosphere Reserve

The Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve is recognized as being one of the world's most important nature areas and 1 of only 15 in Canada. The Biosphere, which comprises lands in the counties of Annapolis, Digby, Yarmouth, Shelburne, and Queens,  is home to many nationally endangered plants and animals including Atlantic Coastal Plain flora, Southern flying squirrel, and Blanding's turtle. it is the largest protected wilderness area in Atlantic Canada, and one of the largest on the east coast of North America. 
It is also home to one of the darkest night time skies in North America and includes the protected core of Tobeatic Wilderness Area and Kejimikujik National Park and National Historic Site as well as a national Heritage River, the Shelburne River.
