The Last House by Ken Tsukamoto

I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan. My mother is in her seventies and still lives alone in the house I grew up in — and she will never need a nursing home, never leave her family a house full of unsorted things, and never have the conversation in an emergency room that American families have every day.

Everyone tells you that's culture. Respect for elders. Devotion. It isn't. It's machinery — an insurance law, a $1 notebook, a street width, a tax rule that makes a house worth less every year instead of more. Someone decided all of it in an office, and most of it you can copy without moving anywhere.

This channel is about the machinery. My main channel, Two Houses, is about the house itself.
