Thundridge Old Church

An iconic landmark in a historic landscape under threat.
Thundridge Old Church is a Grade II* listed medieval tower near Ware, Hertfordshire. This 1,000-year-old site sits within a moated enclosure and holds a unique place in global history.

The Disney Connection: From 1300 to 1543, the Manor of Thundridge was owned by the ancestors of Walt Disney. They built this very tower, and a 1347 covenant famously required a "yearly rose" as rent—a tradition TOCAG continues today.
A Legacy of Justice: The churchyard is the final resting place of Rev. William Hughes, a fierce abolitionist who fought to end the slave trade.

The Fight to Save It: Listed on the Heritage at Risk Register, the tower recently secured a £72,533 Historic England grant for urgent repairs. However, it remains under threat of demolition without a change in ownership.
