Springfield Community Center

Our website highlights the joint efforts of neighbors who constructed a notable log school in 1935, now slated for restoration. It will also illuminate the SCLC/SCOPE's contributions. The story begins in 1774, with Wilkes County, Georgia, distributing land from the Creek Indians. William Sherrills, son of a fur trader, secured 400 acres there. His family endured a Creek Indian attack, surviving largely due to an enslaved person's ingenuity. This region later became Greene County. Armstead Atkinson, owning 1500 acres, moved his enslaved workers from Virginia to Greene County, which later formed part of Taliaferro County, founded in 1825. Post-emancipation, the African American community sought educational and economic autonomy.
Our channel is dedicated to recounting the stories of valiant Black pioneers who exemplify, celebrate, and inform about the pivotal roles of individuals who banded together to forge their own legacy through extraordinary courage across the South and beyond.
