Ashnola Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area

The Smelqmix Protected Area brings to life the vision of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band: protecting and restoring the tmixw—the life force within all four sacred ecosystems. In partnership with community members, allies, volunteers, and organizations, the LSIB is actively restoring and repairing lands that have been degraded or destroyed within the Ashnola Valley, in Southern British Columbia. This work strengthens the interconnected relationships between wildlife, water, the earth, and all who depend on them.

The sməlqmíx, the Syilx people of the Similkameen Valley, have declared a new Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) in their territory—the Ashnola IPCA. This protected area is not simply land set aside from human use. It reflects an ancient and ongoing responsibility: to care for the land and wildlife while living in relationship with them.
