Samizd-Art

Working on an NSF-supported art market project for several years, I visited multiple art fairs and noticed differences between categories of art: blue-chip art, commercial art, collectible design, as well as my favorite—work created from a deeper personal vision. I call it “nonconformist art,” a term rooted in the Soviet underground art movement, where artists held secret exhibitions in apartments (called kvartirniki) outside the state-approved art system. Much of this art later entered the international art market and gained exceptional value.
Welcome to THIS world of art—work created from a deeper personal vision that can hold both cultural and market value over time.
If you’re wondering about the word “samizdat,” it is an Eastern European term meaning “self-publishing.” It emerged in the 1950s and became associated with underground literature and art circulated outside state censorship. It is often understood as a way to spread ideas that eventually contributed to political change.
