Mansoor Shikoh

Naya Shikwa (A New Complaint) is a 64-stanza musaddas that takes up the complaint Iqbal voiced in his Shikwa (1909) and makes it anew, for our own time. It keeps Iqbal's metre (bahr) and six-line stanza, but speaks in today's language about today's world.

It is an emotional journey in six movements: from witnessing suffering, through hunger and the misuse of faith, to the grief of one's own home, and finally to self-examination and a humane request. It begins with a child's paper house and ends asking for a little shade.

Mansoor Shikoh is an Urdu poet who has watched his times closely. He has read deeply in psychology, in the cruelty of the modern world, and in the many ways people believe, doubt and disbelieve. His poems seek the world unveiled, beneath the coverings of habit, comfort and fear.
