The Commission To Strengthen Local Democracy

Our mission is to restore confidence in city government by strengthening local democracy and advocating for government accountability and transparency. 

The Commission holds public hearings in all five boroughs to hear from real New Yorkers about ways to strengthen New York City’s government. We also collaborate with policy experts to draft proposals to strengthen local government. Using this robust medley of voices and suggestions, The Commission then drafts a final report of recommendations to build accountability, transparency and strong local government that we present to the public. 

The Commission is composed of 17 commissioners and includes representation from all New York City elected officials from every borough. Different city agencies appoint all commissioners: 9 are appointed by the Council Speaker, and the remaining 8 are appointed by the Mayor, Public Advocate, Comptroller, and each of the five Borough Presidents.
