French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis

Founded in 1959, the French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL) is a binational institution operated by the French and German MoDs. It develops technological innovations for the armed forces with two objectives:
-    To detect enemy weapons and mitigate their effects for soldier/vehicle protection
-    To provide armed forces with precise, directive destructive energy at long ranges for improved protection/minimisation of collateral damage.

Based on a multi-disciplinary approach, ISL’s research focusses on 5 scientific challenges: energetic materials and systems, future gun systems and smart ammunition, advanced situational awareness, survivability of weapon systems and the protection and performance of dismounted soldiers

With 400 employees, 60% researchers and engineers and around 40 PhD students, ISL’s wide academic network and direct contact with the forces allows it to create relevant innovations before industrial implementation and during joint development.
