The Global Duty of Care

Who has a duty to protect humanity from foreseeable global catastrophe?

The Global Duty of Care is a proposal for governments, through the United Nations, to adopt a shared legal duty to identify, assess and reduce risks capable of catastrophic harm to humanity.

The principle is simple: in aviation, medicine and engineering, we do not wait for disaster. We assess risk, set standards, verify safety and act to prevent failure. Global governance should do the same.

A first priority is nuclear war: moving beyond promises that it must never happen to independent assessment of what could happen, how it could happen, and what governments must do together to prevent it.

The goal: a Global Duty of Care Treaty that moves us from deterrence to prevention, from secrecy to shared assessment, and from “trust, then verify” to “verify together to build cooperative trust.”

One planet. One Humanity. A shared Duty of Care. For All Humanity. Equally.
