The General Social Survey

The General Social Survey (GSS) is a biennial, nationally representative survey that has been conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago since 1972. Since then, the GSS has provided politicians, policymakers, and scholars with a clear and unbiased perspective on what Americans think and feel about such issues as national spending priorities, crime and punishment, intergroup relations, and confidence in institutions.

All GSS data is free to download on the GSS website (gss.norc.org/get-the-data) and can be opened by common statistical software packages.

This channel will introduce you to the GSS and illustrate basic concepts such as sampling, total survey error, wording experiments, and more. Let us show you around!
