Tarra Simmons

Tarra Simmons is the State Representative for Washington's 23rd Legislative District, serving Bremerton and Kitsap County. A former nurse and attorney, Tarra overcame incarceration and homelessness to become, in 2020, believed to be the first formerly incarcerated person ever elected to a state legislature in the country.

In Olympia, Tarra has focused on lowering healthcare costs, expanding mental health and substance use treatment, improving school funding, and building an economy that works for everyone — not just the wealthiest few. She's sponsored laws that expanded free and reduced-cost healthcare to millions of Washingtonians, strengthened hospital charity care, and restored voting rights to people leaving incarceration.
