Accredited Court Interpreters of Canada

Accredited Court Interpreters of Canada (ACIC)

This group was founded out of our shared concern about current working conditions for interpreters in Ontario. Our goal is to raise the standing of accredited interpreters across Canada.

We do not compete with one another. Instead, we encourage each interpreter to compete only with themselves, by continually improving through education and training.

Key principles of the interpreter’s code of ethics

Accuracy and fidelity
Confidentiality
Impartiality
Respect for persons
Maintaining role boundaries
Accountability
Professionalism
Continued competence

Four common errors every interpreter must avoid

Addition: adding words or information the speaker did not say
Omission: leaving out any part of the message
Distortion: changing the meaning of what was said
Embellishment: improving or intensifying the speaker’s words, style or tone

Together we thrive.
