Metatiles is an artistic research ecosystem exploring the coexistence of computational systems, materials, artisanal knowledge, and territory. The research begins with generative and parametric systems and extends into matter, connecting code and pen plotters with ceramic processes, pigments, glazes, clay, minerals, and other materials. The Portuguese ceramic tile becomes a unit of experimentation where computational precision encounters material behaviour, fire, human intervention, and craft knowledge. The physical work can return to the computational system through digitisation, animation, and augmented reality, creating a continuous circulation between different systems of knowledge, creation, and transformation.

Metatiles is an ongoing research project by Catarina Lente, artist, researcher, and computational artisan.
