Buckner Family Travels

Welcome to Buckner Family Travels—the real-life journey of a Black American family building a life in South Africa while staying connected to America and exploring the African continent.

We’re Darren, Rochelle and Malcolm, along with Tank, our German Shepherd. Malcolm is experiencing school and teenage life in South Africa, Dad travels back and forth, and together we share the adjustments, opportunities and unexpected moments of living across continents.

With our American accents and open minds, we explore the people, food, culture, history and everyday realities of South Africa and beyond. We also have honest family conversations about identity, education, race, migration and life in Africa versus America.

Our mission is to celebrate Black people globally and showcase the beauty, complexity and diversity too often overlooked by media and stereotypes.

This is more than travel—it’s our family’s journey home, abroad and everywhere in between. Subscribe and join the Buckner Family.
