Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are caused by the death of nerve cells in the part of the brain called basal ganglia. Our aim is to develop and improve treatments for the diseases and to improve quality of life for patients and their families.

Research Goals

* Revealing the mechanisms underlying basal ganglia degenerative disorders at the molecular and cellular levels.

* Developing novel therapies, which either intervene in disease pathogenesis or repair the already damaged brain.

* Inventing, refining and applying clinical research tools that assist in accurate diagnosis and provide clues to disease pathogenesis.

* Examining interactions between this frontline biomedical and biotechnological research with society in a cultural context, encompassing bioethical issues, patient  expectations, political decision-making and health economics.
