Allegheny College Choirs

The Allegheny Choirs trace their origins largely to the founding of The
Allegheny Singers in 1930 by Morten J. Luvaas. A 1919 graduate of St. Olaf
College, Luvaas formed Allegheny’s first coed choir by combining the men’s
and women’s glee clubs. He also arranged and composed extensively for the
ensemble, propelling them to an ambitious touring schedule which included
performances in prestigious venues of the eastern United States. Under the
leadership of four subsequent directors, Allegheny’s singers have traveled widely
in North America and Europe, exercised their talents under renowned composers,
and collaborated with leading professional musicians. In 2017, Allegheny’s
Chamber Choir completed a two-week tour of New Zealand, marking their first
journey into the Pacific. The College’s program of vocal and choral music has
grown to include multiple auditioned choirs, chamber music ensembles for
opera and musical theater scenes, and group instruction for beginning singers.
