The Criminal Law in a Free Society

You may have heard that traditional liberalism--a concern for individual freedom and dignity--has politically been having a hard time of late. In these short videos, law professor Alex Sarch at University of Surrey gives a brief introduction to the core principles in the classically liberal tradition for how the criminal law should respect individual freedom -that is, how the criminal law would look in a free society. 

In the following clips, Sarch gives a whistle-stop tour of the greatest hits of the classically liberal tradition in Anglophone criminal law, which is aimed not at law professors and lawyers but for those with less legal training who are still concerned to live in a free society. It doesn't aim to provide any concrete answers (that's your job to figure out), but it will hopefully provide useful concepts and terminology to further the discussion about how to balance safety and security with individual freedom and dignity.
