Institute for Local Government (ILG)

The Institute for Local Government (ILG) is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit training organization founded by the League of California Cities. ILG’s programs, tools, and resources support thousands of local agencies across the state, empowers local government leaders, and delivers real-world expertise to help them navigate complex issues, increase their capacity, and build trust in their communities.

The Institute’s story began in 1955, with the support of a Ford Foundation grant to promote inter-jurisdictional cooperation among local agencies. Now, 70 years later, we envision a California where all local government leaders are trusted by the people they serve because of exceptional leadership and an endless pursuit towards thriving and resilient communities in which to live and work.
