About Me:

This channel was set up to honor Will Shade, the harmonica player who led the Memphis Jug Band for thirty years but was buried in a pauper's cemetery when he died in 1966. In the fall of 2007, a group of musicians organized a benefit concert to buy him a gravestone, which was installed in Memphis in May 2008.

When I was in Memphis for the gravestone dedication I walked through three cemeteries that were in use at the time of Burse's passing (he died a few months before Shade) but couldn't find anything. The lots were overgrown with weeds, some of the gravestones were unreadable, and many of the graves were unmarked, so the odds were bad, but I gave it a try. One benefit to the county cemetery in which Will Shade was buried is that records are still maintained by the government and he was relatively easy to track down.

I asked Charlie Musselwhite if he remembers meeting Charlie Burse at Shade's apartment, and he didn't, but I've read other reports that they were great friends. They did play together for a long time.

nice work with the benefit!!! I wonder what ever happened to Charlie Burse in the end. Stumbled across this looking for Insane Crazy Blues. Anyway cheers to you all for your accomplishments!
