That's a bit of a trick question, seeing as NFS went in almost every possible direction in the last 10 years.

You want early Fast and Furious? Underground 2 HANDS DOWN

You want open-world police chases? MOST WANTED (2005) is pretty much the best there is.

You want linear, old-school gameplay with good graphics? THE RUN is pretty good at that, HOT PURSUIT was good too. Both have nitrous though.

Want one of the worst tries at making a story, EVER? play Undercover!

I played need for speed prostreet in the age of 8 and with a joystick :D the speed challanges were the most difficult parts in the game
