I identify myself as Cantonese, from HK, and naturalised in Australia. But there is one major difference with HK and TW is that these two places were rooted from imperial Chinese rule and had no business with the communists (HK was given to UK before China became PRC and TW fought as ROC against PRC).

We are the same ancestry but most of use had the privilege to not have gone through shit like the failed great leap forward and cultural revolution.
