Hipsterism is an offshoot of Postmodernism I believe. It is an inadequate response to the triumph of image over substance by the "ironic" embrace of images, which means engaging in consumer culture while being "aware" of its meaninglessness. The hipster statement is "I do what you do, but at least I'm aware that it's empty and vapid, and that's why I screw around with imagery that does not go together.

Wait a sec. Iff you purposely dislike things because they are popular and go for wierd things that are obviously unpopular, aren't you still letting pop culture dictate your tastes? I mean sure your going in an oposite direction but you are measuring yourself by the same ruler aren't you? Iff you trully wanted to not conform than you would need to live alone in the woods and hunt your own food , build your own shelter and make your own clothing.
