(NaturalNews) A new study recently found that about half of the people with diagnosed depression smoke cigarettes. It's a large percentage and while the cause and effect relationship wasn't studied, it should have been. It wasn't even looked at whether these folks were depressed before they began smoking - because more than likely many of them weren't.

More than 4,000 chemicals are in cigarette smoke and 69 of them are known to cause cancer. Some of the chemicals include: carbon monoxide (which kills if you breathe enough of it), arsenic, hydrogen cyanide (a gas chamber poison), methoprene (a pesticide), freon (which damages the earth's ozone layer to say the least of what it does inside humans), tar (used to make roads), formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies), butane (cigarette lighter fuel), and cyanide.

Cigarette smoke also contains lead and cadmium - and both of these heavy metals are strongly correlated with depression. Lead in the body is infamous for its ability to damage the brain and nervous system. It's also connected with having a lower IQ - so it makes us less intelligent as well. Cadmium is well known to damage the brain and nervous system - and create disease in the liver and kidneys. Both of these metals build inside the bodies of smokers and unless steps are taken to remove them, they'll remain inside long after the exposure has stopped. The lead in cigarettes has a half life of over 22 years.

  • I forgot to mention, we also ached all over our body all night long, and had cold sweat from the cigerette withdrawl! Yeah totally healthy eh?? My husband is super happy now, Smiles so much more, and instead of him sitting by the tube we enjoy the outdoors taking our walks. Life is great, including lots of loving!!!! :D

  • The later, dont need a cigerette to be screwed up in the head. They are already screwed up! lol

Maybe the other 50 percent are on drugs, who knows, but Ill tell you from my experience, Ive noticed a huge difference.

  • So what you're saying is 50% of people who are diagnosed with depression don't smoke, maybe if they did they'd be happy campers. Honestly, talk about coming into a subject with a biased opinion. And for the recoed, I don't smoke.

  • @bobbyatomic No Im not saying that 50 percent do not smoke thats what was written in the article. Why dont you read the ingredients and HELLO putting that in your mouth and your brain would cause just some minor effects, just little effects though not big, LEAD POISION, CARBON MONOXIDE, ARSENIC? What Im saying is Majority of the people who are mentally ill emotional issues have smoking issues. So the other mentally ill might be Sexual Predators, Child Molesters and serial Killers

  • love to see you smoke a ciggy!

  • FaceBook and You-Tube makes me smoke more ciggies than anything else! lol

  • Yep the hardest part of not smoking is the habit itself, not the nicotine withdrawls, apparently the drug is out of your system in a matter of hours.

But WEED screws a person's head up much more than ciggies do. :)

Paying almost $20.00 a packet of 30 over here, how much in the US?

  • Ha ha i quit bout 15 yrs ago. You got the gummi stage to come yet. Spitting yuk into the sink while your lungs clean out. Im a full blown reformed smoker know. I can walk past the people on the train and tell you exactly who the smokers are cause they STINK!!!!!!!! Yuk. Its defnately in my box of life achievements. Good luck!

  • druanna, i quit 1 year ago, i did i throuhg patches, i had to recuce my patches ...but eventually once you get to 14mg of nicotine, its still need of a cold turkey. I had to do that, and thank god i did it. I was ready in the head..thats why it helped me. I used to smoke Gold benson and hedges, and it cost me so much in a month. That was my motivation. To stop that expense to these tobacco firms . Well done for quiting the hard way, i know all to well about the cold turkey, horrible.

  • @druannajohnston congrats on quiting, they should make it illegal in my opinion, it is deadly and addictive, expensive, i dont think anything good comes from it, though ive never tried it so i dont know the full effects of it but i cant see why someone would rather breath in smoke than the semi clean air,

  • both, and I agree with the negative energies that come with smoking or drinking. You will soon also notice how much money you both will have left over. Reward yourself with that extra money on a regular basis so that you consciously also feel it's benefits and your spirit feels loved. As we know, it is mainly a mind thing and we need to 'rewire' our habit. We need to replace it with something that is good for our

body, mind and soul. Well done and keep it going. Namaste :-)

  • Congratulation for you and your husband having the determination to kick this habit. 7 years ago I kicked it as well, cold turkey, after having smoked heavily for 17 years and I haven't had one since. It gets better and better in time. Eventually the craving is no more. I gained weight, but that is normal and you can loose it in time gradually, by changing one's diet also. But I guess it is better to do one thing at a time. I hear, that you are already eating healthier.I am very happy for you
