Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, a Distinguished Speaker at the University at Buffalo, answered a student's question about federal cutbacks to NASA funding. Yeah, our problems are down here and there always will be problems down here, but if there is anything to occupy ourselves with to accomplish something as a species it's the extraterrestrial. NASA pays for itself, they give us inventions that can apply to our daily lives, and with enough research we may be mining asteroids or pure limitless solar energy in the future, but most of all they give our species itself a way forward.

"How would you pay for the universe?"
This line tops one of the most articulate and passionate speeches in favor of NASA I have ever heard. Give me two days of prep. and a thousands monkeys on typewriters and I would be hard pressed to come up with something remotely close to what NGT does off the cuff here.
We need more people like his espousing the wonder and virtue of science in a country where ignorance and science denial is seen as a virtue in many places.
