That is what happens when the Japanese denude mountains and plant nothing but rows of cedar. Mountains are stable so long as a rich variety of plant life knits the mountain together. Deep roots anchor the soil and shallow, wide spreading roots tie it all together. Shrubbery helps prevent wash off. A healthy mountain has a wide variety of plants enriching the soil, and binding the mountainside together. You can see that the color of the soil is very light. It has been depleted, over harvested.

@bitherwack yeah but the japanese don't really have a choice considering the amount of land they have. It's either that, or start to import massively, which will put tens of thousands of people out of work( or invading china again, which is not really an option )
