Charter public schools are open to all. There are 14 charter public schools in Boston. They are free.

Most of the Boston charter schools are small and emphasize a rigorous, challenging, college prep education for every student.

In this video, parents from Boston describe why they choose a charter school.

  • I'm with BBPA4Kids. Hearing from these parents and students, it's hard to think that entrenched interest groups like teachers' unions really have the kids in mind when they oppose public funding for charter schools. If there are twice as many families who want to get out of public schools and into charter schools as are able to, obviously something's going right with these charter schools and wrong with the priorities of local and state government.

  • What a powerful video. It is bittersweet to hear the success stories of these parents and their children and know that hundreds, if not thousands, of inner-city Boston parents and students are being denied access to quality education -- charter schools and other quality options -- by proponents of a harmful status quo!

  • Hi; I produced the video with the Massachusetts Charter School Association and we wanted to showcase what is happening in these schools and for this parents and children. For many families, charter schools have, in fact, changed the game for them. I don't think the video is stating that charter schools are perfect, but they are a valued alternative to the general public school system. Fair enough?

  • Lovely propaganda: if a small school offers Chinese, what common foreign languages does it NOT offer? Everything is a trade-off unless they have a zillion dollars mostly going into instruction. Dream on.

Getting parents to wax eloquent about the personal attention their kids get is smooth, but until you see what goes on in the vast majority of charters, don't be too quick to swallow the Kool-Aid. I find the taste of greed, corruption, mismanagement, sloganeering, and bull unpalatable.

  • Charter schools are the greatest thing that ever happened to inner city schools!

  • Our Community Colleges have done wonders in "dumbing" down their curricula so as to award diplomas to young adults who can neither read nor write above a 5th-grade level.

  • I hope this doesn't sound perverse, but I went to a suburban private school, and I think I might have gotten a better education, and been better prepared for college if I had gone to an intensive charter school like one of these.
