You don't need a beautiful voice to be a great musician

Is this the guy who plays "Renfield" on that terrible version of Dracula (with Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves)?

Yeah, he's a musician that's been in the music biz for thirty-something years now.

I think the "used car lot" lines just reinforce the hopelessness of her case while showing that in her desperation she still has the ability to dream of affluence, style and better times. The chances of her realizing any of them however, are non existent. A real sign of disassociation and disconnection from reality.......sadly sometimes its all one has left. Its hard to figure how Tom can paint such painful scenes without having been there.......not a hooker obviously, but maybe a close relativ.

And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
"One for every year he's away", she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There's nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won't fix
She has that razor sadness that only gets worse
With the clang and the thunder of the Southern Pacific going by
And the clock ticks out like a dripping faucet
'til you're full of rag water and bitters and blue ruin
