University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumnus ('84) Steven Levitan is a creator, director, writer and producer of television comedies. He has created such TV series as Modern Family, Just Shoot Me!, Stark Raving Mad, Stacked, and Back to You. Levitan has been a writer, producer, and director for Wings, Frasier, The Larry Sanders Show, and many others, and he has earned several Emmys and other awards along the way.
Levitan credits the University of Wisconsin-Madison as helping him learn the skills and work ethic needed to succeed in Hollywood, and the many opportunities available on campus helped him hone in on interests that would eventually be his career.
Levitan was active in the Integrated Liberal Studies program, The School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Humorology, and Wisconsin Public Radio, and encourages students to take part in as many activities as they can during their time on campus to find out where their true passions lie.
After graduating, Levitan worked in Madison as a TV news reporter, and eventually landing in his hometown of Chicago to work as a copywriter in advertising. While making commercials in Los Angeles for the ad agency, Levitan realized that creating TV shows might be his true passion, and moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to pursue that dream, and the rest is history.
