In 2008, five high schools in our region with chronically high dropout rates started a transformation. These schools became the first network of high performing schools of the United Way Venture Fund. A perfect storm of collaborative partners, dedicated teachers, and visionary leaders came together to begin a journey that would dramatically transform these schools and is moving graduation rates from less than 60 percent to more than 80 percent in five years. Early indicators show the schools are on track, with chronic absences reduced by more than 25 percent in the first year. Alternative Spring Break 2008 Detroit
Over the last two years, United Way has teamed with local communities across the Gulf Coast to mobilize the power, energy and dedication of young adults to help rebuild after the devastation of Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. This year, we continue to build on the groundswell of compassion and commitment of Gen Y. United Way and young adults from across the country will converge on communities not only along the Gulf Coast, but in Detroit, Michigan as well.
