RG LeTourneau's Machines and More
About Me:

I'm the grandson of RG LeTourneau and grew up around these machines in Peru, Longview and Portland Oregon. When I was 10 my dad put me to work in the summers in different parts of RG LeTourneau Inc. I learned to weld, run machine tools, be a mechanic and run the machines. I've operated Tree Crusher, L-90 Electric digger and various packers and dozers. It came in handy in College where I worked as an operator during the summers to pay for school. I ran WABCO scrapers and got proficient at running dozers, front end loaders, backhoes and even rough motor graders.

I have a passion for my grandfathers machines and when I learned there were boxes of old films at LeTourneau University that no one was doing anything with, I set out to try and raise the money and learn how to transfer old film to digital. I'm using a machine that grabs these films one frame at a time from an HD camcorder in uncompressed 1080P and then using a computer to recombine those frames into an .avi movie. I then edit them some and upload smaller version.

Hi Don,
So great to have found your site as I have been looking now since I retired end of 1995 for some of your Grandfathers old equipement and was giving up till the other day a contact put me on to your videos (so glad)
I worked for the Canadain National Railway here in Toronto and the last 9 years I operated 5 of our Letourneau machines on overseas containers and I loved operating them. When I can get some copies made to put in my computer I will send you some photos. get well soon so we can have more of the great videos to watch.

I love the loader video! I had heard about R.G.'s hatred of anything hydraulic. They were very unreliable during those days when they were still using leather seals. I agree, not suited for anything as heavy as a LeTourneau loader. I worked there during the very early 1980's (during the oil boom) when we were building lots of L-800 and a couple of L-1200 loaders. I was in awe of the size of the machines! I heard all about the "Hydraulics War" between Lloyd Molby and R.G. and couldn't get the concept of a LeTourneau loader that only used racks and pinions. Now, I see what they were talking about! Thanks for putting this film on line for everyone to see! I notice that the operator was not protected in a cage from the big boulders that were being loaded. This would scare me to death to operate! The hydraulic line seemed much, much safer than the old one.

I'm convalescing from knee replacement surgery and started working on some more film today. I should have a good batch of new transfers to upload by the end of the week. Some teasers ...... a tree stomper ...... log skidder in Panama .... tree crushers in Canadian snow ..... and more.

edwardo826 .... I have some photos (from slides) of some Tournarocker Dumps (only 3-4), but I'm hoping to run across some film of them in the archives. Message me your email and I'll send you some copies of the photos.

Kaklhara1979 ... there is one vid of an early wheel loader (front end loader), unless you are talking about something else. http://www.youtube.com/user/tournadude?feature=mhsn#p/u/42/HulrAIu2AbU

Stay tuned, more to come.

I love your videos / movies and I just discovered them today by accident. Really cool stuff here but I am looking for something you do not have as far as I can see .My 82 year old friend ran Turnarocker Dumps that dumped by bending in the middle with an electric winch so the tires almost touched each other. I am having trouble finding any info on them or even a picture and any help would make an old man very happy . Ed from Mission BC Canada

R.G. LeTourneau a man way ahead of his time ..... very impressive machines

@Virtunaut, I have some great photo's of Tournarockers, but no film yet. But then I have only been through maybe 20% of the film and a tiny fraction of the photos. RG pioneered so many of the machines we see today, it's amazing.

I used to keep a pair of logstackers running at a saw mill in Pilot Rock Oregon. I really like your stuff. Found more info in a half hour than I found on the whole internet in the last 5 years. Thanks a lot. JRay Pendleton Oregon
