Tiê (pronounced Tee-eh) started playing on the same Sao Paulo clubs as CSS and Bonde do Role but very differently from the "party-music" of her Brazilian peers, her music is the missing link between Elliott Smith, Cat Power and Bossa Nova, Tropicalia and MPB ("Brazilian Popular Music").
Born and raised in Sao Paulo, after winning several "battle of bands" festivals in "sampa", Tiê studied music and composition in New York before touring with Toquinho (a major name on MPB, Bossa Nova) around Brazil and the world.
Back in Sao Paulo Tiê developed her style by bridging two different worlds the local alternative/indie scene and the Bossa Nova/Tropicalia sounds of the previous generation. Her list of influences range from Caetano Veloso to Syd Barrett.
"Sweet Jardim" ("Sweet Garden") was recorded in an analogical studio in Sao Paulo with acoustic guitars, cello and piano and all the silences filled with breathing, exhaling and dialogues among the musicians all in a low-fi, live soundscape.
Tiê wrote all the ten songs and plays most of the instruments on the record - which was produced by Plinio Profeta.
On the first track - "Assinado eu" ("signed, me"), that chronicles a difficult, delicate and subtle love story that never actually comes to full fruition at one point she sings: "so sorry for not becoming your lover, I was suffocated".
On "Stranger but Mine" the only English track on the album Tiê twists her accent on a tale of unfamiliar love.
From the lonely piano of "Te Valorizo" that echoes catpower to the gipsy bossa of "Sweet Jardim" there's little space in the record for what is not organic, slow beauty.
