How the Hubble Deep Field Was Taken tdarnell - 36,605 views - 1 week ago
Since I made the "Most Important Image" video, I have consistently gotten emails asking how the image was taken in the first place.

Here is a video from HubbleSite.org that does a great job of telling the story of how the first Hubble Deep Field was taken in 1995.

What many people don't know is that the decision to try and take this image was very risky for the project scientists. Time on the Hubble telescope is in very high demand and very competitive and using it to stare at an empty patch of sky was considered a waste, especially if nothing turned up.

It was far from clear that the telescope would see anything at all after such long exposures. The risk paid off however, and the rest is history.

AstronomyBuff #3: I Have Proof of Intelligent Design! tdarnell - 128,147 views - 2 years ago
Sorry for the exclamation mark, but this is huge! I have uncovered irrefutable evidence that the universe was designed.

I even disclose who it was.

AstronomyBuff #2: Stellarium and Planetary Alignment 6/30/07 tdarnell - 53,931 views - 2 years ago
There is a cool planetary alignment this Saturday, June 30th. I wanted to play with Stellarium and my new screen grabber software to produce a 'planetarium-style' presentation.

DeepAstronomy SE: The Face On Mars (Isn't) tdarnell - 29,705 views - 2 years ago
Hello Space Fans, the SE stands for special edition. I didn't have enough 'stuff' for my Face on Mars video so I turned it into a video blog entry.

In October 2006, the European Space Agency and Malin Space Science Systems made an awesome, hires flyover animation of the 'Face' on Mars.

Here, I explain why the Numa Numa guy is in the HDF Video, and that no, the video wasn't hacked by elves.

Hubble Deep Field: The Most Imp. Image Ever Taken (Redux) tdarnell - 1,134,502 views - 2 years ago
This is the latest incarnation of the HDF video. The narration has been edited to include research from a paper in Physical Review Letters (2004) which puts the size of the universe at 46.5 billion light years, not 78 billion as I originally stated.

In the video narration, I round that value up to 47 billion light years.

I also took out Numa Numa guy.

O "Hubble Deep Field": A Imagem Mais Importante Ja Tirada tdarnell - 257,257 views - 2 years ago
Em 2003, o Telescópio Espacial Hubble fotografou a imagem do milênio, uma imagem que mostra nosso lugar no universo. Qualquer um que entende o que esta imagem representa, é permanentemente mudado por ela.

A very kind viewer, Leonardo Bays, added subtitles in Brazillian Portugese. Thanks Leonardo!

Life in the Universe (#1): Just on Earth, or Everywhere? tdarnell - 333,264 views - 2 years ago
This is the first episode of a series on life in the universe. Looking for life in the universe isn't like looking for your car keys. It's hard to know where to even start. The best place to start is probably by NOT trying to find alien civilizations, but rather ANY kind of life we can.

The problem is, civilizations live and die in the blink of an eye compared to the lifecycles stars. They could come and go and we'd never know it.

The Hubble Deep Field Video with narration cleaned up tdarnell - 203,885 views - 2 years ago
Here's the same video but with the smacking and breathing sounds removed and cleaned up. I apologize for not doing this before, but I never listened to the video with earphones on.

Numa Numa guy is still there. Taking him out would have been more work that I wanted to do. Just FF past him if you don't like it.

Added James McCarthy to credits, thanks to LodeStone1968 for the info.

Hello Space Fans, I realize I've been away for a couple of years NOT posting my videos to YT. Sorry about that.

I think you'd understand if you had any idea what's gone on in my life for the last couple of years.

Long story short, I've moved 1,000 miles east to Champaign, IL (?!?!?!) and am working at the University of Illinois.

Things have calmed down in my life to a point where I can begin making/uploading videos again.

Certainly, the work I'm doing here will be the subject of a great many of them.

Thanks for hanging in there and being patient. I really never expected anyone to notice my absence. I couldn't have been more mistaken.

Thanks and stay tuned!

ownage1000k (5 days ago)
Hi again,

Could you maybe make a Vlog on the current 'Nibiru', 'Planet X' crazy thats going on, and explain why it is imposible - and what that 'new star' really is - It would be a breath of fresh air to have some real facts between all the crazy conspiracies.

Great videos!
