From the podium of the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago, the day before her canceled talk on "Morality Without Gods," Sunsara Taylor calls for the EHS to reverse their wrong decision. She describes how the decision was based on slander and anti-communism and that going along with this wrong, even in the name of preserving the unity of the Society, is fortifies this wrong. At a time when dissident and radical voices are routinely dis-invited, suppressed, and pressured to self-censor, the EHS is contributing to a broader chill in society.
Further, this is a time when dissident voices are most needed and no discussion of ethics or morality can really be either if it does not expand the space for a truthful discussion of our responsibility to stop the US wars of aggression, torture, massive violence against women, racist populism, fear-mongering against immigrants and the overall suppression of dissent. These are themes that Sunsara Taylor planned to address, as well as bringing alive communist morality, as she wrote in her original talk description, "a morality rooted in, and serving as a guide to get to, a world without men oppressing women, without a handful accumulating vast wealth at the expense of the many, without white people lording it over people of color, without one country trying to run the whole globe, and a world where critical thought and the scientific pursuit of the truth, as well as artistic and intellectual ferment and the flourishing of individuality, are fostered."
