@credenza1 Hi I have never done any salt firing. I don't really like the orange peel texture
I do however fancy doing some soda firing.
Lisa Hammond fires a soda kiln and she produces some amazing pots

@credenza1 a sharpened stick is a traditional tool but I use it because a metal tool tends to slice away the clay too much a wooden one drags a little which gives a better texture. Shoji Hamada used a knife to facet pots but he said it had to be a very old rusty one.

I spent every holiday from the age of 3 to 17 in St Ives, 1960 to 1974 Hippie potters and artists at every turn. I am convinced that this is the reason I am a potter. The place just seeps into your psyche.

Hi, I try to throw in a free, spontaneous way ( Hamada Shoji calls it throwing without thinking) and feel that adding the decoration at the time of throwing enhances the form.

@janicethepotter I don't know what I would call it I suppose it depends on how you would use it. A good way of creating a nice shape is with an upturned stool or chair on a table, just tie the corners of a cloth to each leg and lay your slab in the centre. for a bigger slab you could make a simp...
