I learned about solar cooking by accident while doing research on the web about how to heat your home with solar heaters. Once I learned about solar cooking from solar cooking.org I have built several ovens and cookers. One of my favorite ovens I built was from an old 1940's Nesco electric roaster I watched my mom bake turkeys in. So, I converted it into a solar oven, and this oven reaches well over 225 degrees once warmed up before food is placed in it. I also have a slantfaced cardboard oven I built that reaches over 200 degrees that is big enough to cook a whole meal and dessert.

It is my goal to spread the word around regarding solar cooking, especially to help those who are homeless or low income.

To learn more about solar cooking, go to solarcooking.org

AND REMEMBER, ALWAYS WEAR SUNGLASSES WHEN DEALING WITH SOLAR OVENS!

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to make sure I emphasize the importance of wearing sunglasses when using solar ovens with especially alot of reflectors. There is damage that can be done to the retina that you actually CAN'T FEEL when you have been "flashed" by a reflector.

ALWAYS WEAR EYEPROTECTION IN THE FORM OF SUNGLASSES WHEN USING ANY KIND OF SOLAR OVEN WITH ANY KIND OF REFLECTORS!

Solar cooking is fun, BUT it has its drawbacks just like cooking in a kitchen with dangers of hot burners. In this case eyes need to be protected AT ALL TIMES when around a solar oven with alot of reflection.

Parabolic dishes are the most dangerous because of the focal points being intense.

If you need to look in your oven, approach it from the back or side, and turn it AWAY from the sun, THEN tend to it.

So PLEASE wear your sunglasses and stay safe while solar cooking.

I tried it today in my turkey roaster. I fitted it with a glass top and then set it out to warm. It almost got hot enough to pasteurize without reflectors! Sadly, by the time I had reflectors put together it was 3:00pm... and then the goats tore the reflectors. ;(

====================================================

HEY THERE! yep, you have to start EARLY. Always preheat the oven at least 1 hour before attempting to cook. I start my days getting up, going straight outside to get the ovens out, and preheating, then when I have my food lined up to cook, and some chores done, the ovens are fired up and ready for baking when I get to them.

LOL on the goats, ya gotta love them and their curiosity, LOL.

225 is a good temp to cook. it will cook meat, breads, etc. sounds like you are on your way to successfull solar cooking!
nnwumeh (1 year ago)
I really appreciate your solar cooking videos and I see some of them on the solar cooking wiki. I recently built a suntastic cooker that made the temp. of a pot 225 degrees. Is that a good temperature?

I have watched all your videos and became totally inspired! So while my slow dial up loaded your videos I built a solar oven like your aluminum roasting pan one. I should be sleeping, instead I'm planning my first dish to try tomorrow. I think I will try rice. Hopefully we will have sun shine to go with the inspiration. I also hope you will put more videos on You Tube as you make it so simple and within reach, unlike some of the real difficult instructions I've seen.
Thank you
