I had a thought on the Renaissance decor in the final sequence of 2001. The theme of evolution by expanding consciousness is equated to tool use in the film, with the bone-to-spacecraft transition being the most famous example.
The European Renaissance represented a massive leap of at least one Earth culture from the primitiveness of the Medieval era to the more advanced state of the Enlightenment. I think the choice of decor here may be a clue that the monolith appeared on Earth many times, advancing not only our biological but also our cultural evolution.
It could also be a reference to the technological Renaissance that was coming to fruition in the 1960s.
