A holdout scenario like this, which rings of nazi zombies or l4d's survival mode, is always pretty fun.  but what if there were an intended rescue or escape after like 10-20 minutes? you could allow the player to choose a difficulty level by letting him choose how long he has to survive...10, 15, 20 minutes. and as the player passes each 5 minute gate, a new enemy, weapon, and/or area is introduced. the finality of a rescue could make the gameplay even more interesting because you can put a little timer or audio indicator to motivate the player and create drama. good luck with the rebuild.
