GOVERNMENT HIGHLIGHTS ITS ACHIEVEMENTS IN FOUR SECTORS. The Government has highlighted its achievement in four development areas. The Government Spokesman Dr. Alfred Mutua has said it is the right of all Kenyans to know how their taxes are being used. He said all revenue collected is used in building of the nation.
Dr Mutua added that Government officials are in their offices not to politic but ensure that they deliver on promises made to Kenyans. In his weekly briefing this Thursday, Dr. Mutua highlighted the governments achievement in various sectors, among them, the water sector and development and construction of road networks. He also underlined governments achievements in the Agricultural sector despite the erratic rainfall at the start of the year.
The Government Spokesman emphasized that Kenya cannot be categorized as a failed state. Dr. Mutua urged the media to undertake more coverage on governments development projects and achievements and not just focus on the negatives. We need to talk up our country, not down, he said.
Kenyas road network, he said, is much better compared to those in many other African nations. He said the Government is providing free seeds to Kenyans to address the issue of food security in the country.
He cited the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute(KARI) as being at forefront in innovativeness and research that continues to provide the country with highly advanced breeds for livestock and plant seeds. Kenya is conducting research that is being adopted all over the world. The Government Spokesman said.
Dr. Mutua asked Kenyans to observe domestic hygiene especially in this rainy season, adding that many water sources such as rivers could be contaminated. He called on Kenyans to boil their drinking water and added that the government is working to deliver on its pledge to Kenyans. We cant claim to be perfect, but we are working to achieve on the 20 areas of our development agenda. He said.

The government urges all Kenyans across the country to take advantage of this rainy season to plant as many trees as possible. As you know the government and the country has noted that we have suffered because of lack of trees and the exploitation that has been there of some of our forest cover.
Therefore to increase our forest cover and also to have enough trees to even for use for timber the government is encouraging all citizens and families to make sure they plant trees during this rain season. To that end we are requesting all head teachers in the country to make sure that their students to plant at least six trees per student in our high schools, primary schools and even our poly techniques, and colleges.
We would like to get all students in school whether in nursery, standard one to plant at least six trees, three trees at home or a place near where they live and three trees near their school area.
If this is done in our schools, the government believes it will roll over and be done across the country. The government is also encouraging communities, community groups, companies and businesses in Kenya to have a programme to plant trees this season.
We are also looking at the kazi kwa vijana project to get youth more engaged in projects so that its not only a daily thing, but will be a project that will make them derive their economic stability and economic strength.

The Government wishes to assure Kenyans that the program for restoring the Mau Water Catchment is still on and Phase one is about to begin. Already notices have been given and the Government expects those who are occupying the Mau forest illegally to heed to the request by the Government and the People of Kenya to move out.
The Government wishes to make it very clear that there is not blanket solution to the Mau issue and that eviction and compensations will be dealt with on a case to case basis.
The Government also wishes to let Wananchi know that any movement of people from the forest will be conducted in a humane and respectful manner. The policy is to get everybody out of the water catchment area to allow rehabilitation of the forest to start.

There is no conflict between Special Programmes Ministry and that of Provincial Administration, says Minister
Minister for Special Programmes Ms Naomi Shabban has clarified that the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are still in transit camps are there because certain people who had expressed interest to sell land to the Government to resettle displaced persons had shot up the selling prices from their initial offer therefore delaying the process.
She added that her ministry and that of Provincial Administration which is headed by Prof. George Saitoti do not have a conflict, we are a small Ministry which operates with the Ministry of Provincial Administration. Ms. Shabaan said about half a billion of the 2.2 billion intended to resettle IDPs had been released and her ministry is in the process of giving out the money, the rest of the money to the tune of Ksh1.4 billion is going to be used to purchase the first chunk of lands which will be given to the people in self-help groups.
On the issue of visa revocation to a senior Government official by the United States Government, the Minister described the move by the US as, drama from the Americans. She said Kenya is sovereign State and must be respected. She further called on Kenyans to stop cheering on an issue such as that.

The Government is very concerned by constant collapsing of buildings either under construction or which have been constructed.
The collapsing of these buildings leads to death, injury and loss of money and is something that should not be occurring. Everytime there is an incident of collapsed buildings, there is rhetoric on how it should not have occurred and that something needs to be done. Unfortunately, the incidents have continued to occur, meaning that appropriate measures have not been employed.
To correct this, the Government is reviewing the approval and supervision systems for new and existing buildings. The Government will very soon ensure new measures that will permanently alter the whole process of constructing and supervision of buildings in Kenya. The new measures will include very stiff sanction against any Government official and/or businessman who is negligent and who is not adhering to the laid down procedures.
The collapse of the building in Kiambu is very sad and one that has so far claimed 16 lives. Three (3) people are still in hospital, (one in Kiambu and the other KNH) and 12 have been treated and discharged.
The rescue operation has been well co-ordinated and was carried out speedily despite the heavy rains and the Government sends its condolescenses to the family of the bereaved.
