The government urges all Kenyans across the country to take advantage of this rainy season to plant as many trees as possible. As you know the government and the country has noted that we have suffered because of lack of trees and the exploitation that has been there of some of our forest cover.
Therefore to increase our forest cover and also to have enough trees to even for use for timber the government is encouraging all citizens and families to make sure they plant trees during this rain season. To that end we are requesting all head teachers in the country to make sure that their students to plant at least six trees per student in our high schools, primary schools and even our poly techniques, and colleges.
We would like to get all students in school whether in nursery, standard one to plant at least six trees, three trees at home or a place near where they live and three trees near their school area.
If this is done in our schools, the government believes it will roll over and be done across the country. The government is also encouraging communities, community groups, companies and businesses in Kenya to have a programme to plant trees this season.
We are also looking at the kazi kwa vijana project to get youth more engaged in projects so that its not only a daily thing, but will be a project that will make them derive their economic stability and economic strength.

The Government wishes to assure Kenyans that the program for restoring the Mau Water Catchment is still on and Phase one is about to begin. Already notices have been given and the Government expects those who are occupying the Mau forest illegally to heed to the request by the Government and the People of Kenya to move out.
The Government wishes to make it very clear that there is not blanket solution to the Mau issue and that eviction and compensations will be dealt with on a case to case basis.
The Government also wishes to let Wananchi know that any movement of people from the forest will be conducted in a humane and respectful manner. The policy is to get everybody out of the water catchment area to allow rehabilitation of the forest to start.

There is no conflict between Special Programmes Ministry and that of Provincial Administration, says Minister
Minister for Special Programmes Ms Naomi Shabban has clarified that the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are still in transit camps are there because certain people who had expressed interest to sell land to the Government to resettle displaced persons had shot up the selling prices from their initial offer therefore delaying the process.
She added that her ministry and that of Provincial Administration which is headed by Prof. George Saitoti do not have a conflict, we are a small Ministry which operates with the Ministry of Provincial Administration. Ms. Shabaan said about half a billion of the 2.2 billion intended to resettle IDPs had been released and her ministry is in the process of giving out the money, the rest of the money to the tune of Ksh1.4 billion is going to be used to purchase the first chunk of lands which will be given to the people in self-help groups.
On the issue of visa revocation to a senior Government official by the United States Government, the Minister described the move by the US as, drama from the Americans. She said Kenya is sovereign State and must be respected. She further called on Kenyans to stop cheering on an issue such as that.

The Government is very concerned by constant collapsing of buildings either under construction or which have been constructed.
The collapsing of these buildings leads to death, injury and loss of money and is something that should not be occurring. Everytime there is an incident of collapsed buildings, there is rhetoric on how it should not have occurred and that something needs to be done. Unfortunately, the incidents have continued to occur, meaning that appropriate measures have not been employed.
To correct this, the Government is reviewing the approval and supervision systems for new and existing buildings. The Government will very soon ensure new measures that will permanently alter the whole process of constructing and supervision of buildings in Kenya. The new measures will include very stiff sanction against any Government official and/or businessman who is negligent and who is not adhering to the laid down procedures.
The collapse of the building in Kiambu is very sad and one that has so far claimed 16 lives. Three (3) people are still in hospital, (one in Kiambu and the other KNH) and 12 have been treated and discharged.
The rescue operation has been well co-ordinated and was carried out speedily despite the heavy rains and the Government sends its condolescenses to the family of the bereaved.

The Government urges leaders and Wananchi to shun negativity and embrace the spirit of working together to make Kenya an even greater country than it is today. This is the only way we are going to reach our potential and to effectively fight poverty and achieve the success we desire.
The last few years have been challenging to all of us as a nation, but the People of Kenya have proved their ability to rise up and overcome the problems that have faced us.
The reality today is that all nations face problems and disasters every so often. What is important though, is not complaining about the challenges, but the spirit and work that lifts the nation from those challenges. The Government is committed to changing the lives of Kenyans. The President, Prime Minister and entire Government are working very well and in tandem to enable us to move at an even faster rate.
It is true that we are faced with challenges of drought, youth unemployment, corruption and insecurity among others. However, it is also true that we are a blessed country with a vibrant and educated population. We now have dispensaries and hospitals built and being built across the country. We have massive water projects to enable our mothers and children access clean water; we have thousands of kilometers of roads being constructed. We also have electricity and even Stima loans as villages are being transformed by rural electrification; we have free Primary & Day Secondary Education; we have a thriving tourism industry, Universities that are expanding and reforms that will reduce insecurity. Our industries are vibrant and the country has launched work programs and financial funds for youth employment. And, we have a working Vision 2030, among many other successful programs.
Listening to some people talk, especially foreign funded Civil Society, or watching news reports and reading some newspaper headlines, you would think Kenya is at the brink of failure. Constant criticism and negativity over everything is making us a complaining nation. I will not be surprised if this call for the spirit of being positive is ignored or ridiculed by some media practitioners and others who are enslaved by chains of doomsday prophecies. However, their doomsday prophecies will not dampen our motivation to succeed. The huge population that is visiting centers today to celebrate Public Service Week, is a testimony to that positive spirit.
Everyday, politicians and others are casting aspersions, blaming President Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, VP, Kalonzo Musyoka and Kenyans in general. Everyday some people are complaining about this and that. This has the negative impact of killing our spirit as Kenyans, which in turn slows down development and makes it harder for us to succeed. For every negative issue in Kenya, the truth is that there are ten positive issues.
Therefore, let us embrace a positive perspective. Let us TALK UP and NOT TALK DOWN our country.
Truly, there is no challenge that we, the citizens of this great country, cannot overcome if we work together. Kenya is a succeeding state and our success has just begun.
Let us all be proud to be Kenyans and let us Talk Up our Country.
